Magic Crackers kicks off its third year of magic moments in the City of Pines

John Lloyd Cruz surprises this lady.

Press release: Magic Man John Lloyd Cruz has struck again, this time kicking off the third wave of the Magic Moments campaign in the City of Pines, Baguio City.

The Magic Fun Fair set foot at the University of Baguio, where students enjoyed fair-themed game booths. Students  enjoyed games such as Spill the Magic Coating, Go Fish Magic Junior, Magic Tic-Tac-Chips, Magic Wheel of Creams and of course, everyone’s favorite, the Magic Selfie with Lloydie booth wherein they could bring home printouts of their snapshots with the Magic Man’s life-sized standee.

The fair became even livelier as the Acting Acting Lang booth opened its floors to students who bravely took the challenge of re-enacting Magic’s Anticipation Television Commercial. Complete with vibrant costumes, props, and cast stand-ins, the search for the day’s best actress was on as fearless females played the role of the TVC’s main character. Little did one of the participants know, she was up for more than just bragging rights of being the day’s leading lady.

Expecting that a stand-in for John Lloyd Cruz will appear at the end of the stint, 20-year old Charina Nuynuyan  screamed in surprise as she came face-to-face with the actual Magic Man. To add to the already-magical moment, JLC awarded Charina with a Magic Valentine Shopping Spree worth P50,000 of Robinsons gift certificates. In Robinsons Supermarket on Session Road, a lucky mommy-grocer also got the shock of her life when, after being made to wait for a free product, the Magic Man appeared out of nowhere to personally replenish the stocks. Aside from meeting the matinee idol, the mom of two, Mary Jane S. Salvador of Gabriela Silang, Baguio City, also received a Magic Valentine Package consisting of an overnight stay, dinner for two and a spa package.

More Magic Moments await lucky, unsuspecting targets as the team continues to go around the country to spread more cheer. Witness how our lucky winners were surprised by the Magic Man and like the official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/magiccracker

What makes Goto Batangas Different?

Who doesn't love to slurp on steaming hot bowl of goto either as breakfast or as an afternoon merienda (snack)? Goto is somewhat similar in appearance to Arroz Caldo or a Chinese congee since both are made of rice porridge, but they have different ingredients, chicken for Arroz Caldo while it is often ox tripe or pork innards for Goto. Goto is usually eaten with tokwa't baboy (a dish made of fried tofu and pork slices in spicy vinegar) on the side, the two makes a perfect meal as their tastes complement each other. A typical street food in the Philippines, one can find a Gotohan (eatery which serves nothing else but Goto) in almost every corner of the street. But have you ever tried Goto Batangas? If you haven't tried it yet, you're probably missing one hell of a great soup here.

So what exactly makes Goto Batangas special from the ordinary goto that we've come to know? Well, for one, Goto Batangas is made of beef innards and not pork. It is not made of rice porridge, but simply beef broth alone. It has ginger, onions, and annato (atsuete) to add a dash of orange color. It tastes really divine--easily reminds one of the chicken soup your Grandma or mom serves when you're sick. It really is a comfort food for most Batanguenos (term for locals who hail from Batangas).

Even if you're not a fan of beef innards, you might have a liking for Batangas' take on Pinoy favorite Goto. It is worth giving it a try because although it may not look that enticing given the fact that it has a beef's internal organs as its main ingredient, but it really is perfectly described as "malinamnam because it brings out that natural umami flavor. Best consumed with a dash of Philipine lemon or more popularly known as Calamansi, some red hot chili and soy sauce for dipping, Batangas Goto truly takes soup into a higher level. So if you find yourself in the vicinity of Batangas or Tagaytay area, apart from Lomi, which is another Batangueno favorite, why not try a bowl of Goto Batangas? I guarantee you, it is a soup treat you shouldn't miss!

PING GU CRISPY FRIED OYSTER MUSHROOM FRIES

The first time I discovered that one could make fried oyster mushroom tasted like fried chicken was almost a decade ago. It was at that time when my beloved nephew Kyle did not want to eat anything else except ‘fried chicken’. Of course, I needed to feed him and that’s how I came about frying oyster mushrooms.  Luckily, Kyle loved it and he did not notice any difference. It was only several years after when I made my ‘confession’ that it wasn’t a ‘real’ chicken. So imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon Ping Gu Crispy Fried Oyster Mushroom Fries during my recent visit at Cucina Andare.

Ping Gu Crispy Fried Oyster Mushroom Fries will have you at “Love at first bite up to the last one”. And if I’m not mistaken, it’s a ‘first’ in the local food scene. It is comfort food at its best. Ping Gu Oyster Mushroom Fries owner Ms. Jewel Joven proudly says that they have a customer who had to travel far just to satisfy his cravings of their Ping Gu Fried Oyster Mushroom Fries.

Joven’s original family business had something to do with handicrafts. But for some reason, after winning Entrepreneur magazine’s the Search for the Big Food Entrepreneur in 2012, which eventually earned them enough capital to start a new business, Ping Gu Crispy Oyster Mushroom Fries was born. They tested the waters in the said business in January of 2013 when they first opened in another foodie haven Mezza Norte. After five months, they now have another branch at Cucina Andare.

I asked Ms. Joven how they’re able to maintain the oyster mushroom’s quality considering the heat in the country. You see, oyster mushrooms can be quite difficult to handle as improper handling could lead to changes in appearance from ivory white to yellowish and from soft to slimy. According to Ms. Joven, they’re very strict when it comes to oyster mushroom standards. “They are delivered to us freshly harvested at around 3 or 4AM.” Ping Gu sourced their oyster mushrooms from Nasugbu, Batangas but eventually Joven had expressed her desire to have their own mushrooms.

Okay, so what is it about Ping Gu Crispy Oyster Mushroom Fries? It is very light yet tasty. It comes in three different dipping sauces: ketsup (for the conventional ones), gravy (best for kids, again I was right it tasted like chicken!) or Sweet Chilli sauce for an added kick! It is available in three sizes: Single Serve is at 100 grams for only Php79, Double Serving is at 200 grams for Php149 and Triple Serving or Family Size at 300 grams for Php229.
