Wei Wei Freshly Frozen Hotpot Product Review + DIY Hotpot Recipe

DIY Hotpot from Wei Wei, freshly frozen products
I am a self-confessed Hotpot fan. I love the warm rich soup with honest-to-goodness broth especially on a rainy season. I love making my bowl and there's a good selection of  veggies and protein options to assemble it. So when I've heard about We Wei Special Freshly Frozen hotpot in a box, I got really excited to try them. Although it's going to be my first time to cook a D-I-Y (Do-it-yourself) hotpot, I know I could never go wrong because the instructions are easy peasy.

So what's inside the Wei Wei Special Hotpot Freshly Frozen product box? Lobster ball, Cheese Fish bun, Crab Roe Bun, Carotene Bun, Crab Fish Ball, Flower Slice, Gabi Ball, Golden Fin, Crabstick, Moon Roll, Mushroom Ball, Pre-Fried Tofu, Seafood Sandwich, Seafood Bun, Singapore Fish Ball, Squid Ball, Squid Rings and mixed veggies. Seafood includes: scallops, squid rings and shrimps. Yes, you get all of these for Wei Wei Hotpot box that costs Php198 only! What a great value for money!

Wei Wei Freshly Frozen hotpot contents
Cooking time may vary depending on the appliance used. You may opt to steam and stir fry the products but I've prefer just dumping them on the soup base.
Pork Bone Soup base in pack is included on the Wei Wei Hotpot box
I've also added a few more veggies to make the hotpot dish more enticing and healthier. I've bought Bok Choi or Taiwanese Petchay (read: napa cabbage), grated ginger, minced fresh garlic, sliced red onions, spring onions and two pieces of small taro sliced into cubes and bean sprouts. I also sauteed the onions and garlic on a block of butter for aroma and better creamy taste. Since I am into spicy foods, I've also incorporated some chili by adding a spoonful of Korean Gochujang paste for an added kick into the hotpot dish.

Bok Choi leafy greens, minced garlic, thinly sliced onions, onion springs and block of butter
Two small pieces of Taro cut into cubes

Fresh bean sprouts I got from the market
Cooking instructions for Pork Soup (Broth) base:
Add the soup base into a boiling water (1.5-2.0L). Then place frozen products into the boiling water for 5-7 minutes.

Ingredients:

1 3.75-ounce package cellophane (bean thread) or thin rice noodles or glass noodles (whatever you prefer), 1 tablespoon olive oil 8 ounces shiitake or other mushrooms, stems discarded and caps thinly sliced. 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger, bok choi leafy greens, 2 pcs. small taro cut into cubes, 1 teaspoon chili sauce or hot pepper sauce to taste or Gochujang paste (optional) 4 scallions (green and white parts), Wei Wei Freshly Frozen Hotpot box (Php198 each box).

Procedure:

Prepare the noodles according to the package directions. Drain and cut into 3-inch lengths.
Meanwhile, heat the block of butter into a large saucepan over medium-heat. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes.
Add the broth soup base pack (done according to instructions), taro/gabi cubes, ginger, and chili sauce (if desired) and combine. Bring to a boil. Then, add the entire package of Wei Wei Hotpot pack.
Add the scallions, carrots, corn and green beans. Simmer until the vegetables are tender, 5 to 6 minutes.
Divide the noodles among individual bowls and ladle the soup over the top.

Some Korean Gochujang Paste for some added kick (optional)

How was the taste? The crab cakes were amazing and probably my only favorite! The hotpot was immense! Wei Wei Freshly Frozen hotpot is so varied that anyone can find something exciting to eat.  Good vegetarian, fish, and meat dishes. This hotpot is bound to become my monthly indulgence. It isn't the cheapest hotpot option around, but each time I'd buy it, I know that I'm in for a treat. If you want a simple and satisfying hotpot experience, just go for their Wei Wei Freshly Frozen Hotpot pack, which is painstakingly boiled down from whole chickens into a silky savory broth.

I always fall back on a few favourites - Crab Roe Bun, which melts in the mouth once boiled into the soup; Golden Fin that are super fresh and sweet tasting with slivers of big red chilli pounded into the meat; Seafood Sandwich which is tender, value for money and huge. The minced/grated ginger and other hotpot balls were warming to the belly. I'm impressed by the freshness of the squid, fish, prawns and also the hotpot was tasty! I will definitely buy another pack again.
