Skull and Bones UP Town Center: University Comfort Food Review

It’s been more than a decade since I’ve finished my communications course from an exclusive all-girls’ Catholic school in Manila. Back then, I could vividly recall that our school canteen almost seemed to have it all: (well, except maybe during holy week) from Mexican tacos, Filipino viands, sizzling meals cooked right in front of you, street foods like chicken, squid and fish balls, tokneneng (fried breaded quail eggs); there were also healthier alternatives such as fruit shakes, salads + sumptuous dessert choices to my all-time favorite comfort food, American burgers, fries and dogs. So you could just imagine the big grin on my face when I’ve found out that there’s actually a food joint called Skull and Bones tucked on the second floor of UP Town Center in Katipunan Avenue where I could reminisce the good ‘ol fun of college days while munching on my favorite cheesy fries or chili con carne laden hotdog sandwich.

Walls are adorned with photos of graduates.

Skull and Bones had derived its name from a very prestigious ‘fraternity group’ in the US where some of the members eventually became really famous, one even became president of the United States of America. Skull and Bones is an undergraduate senior secret society at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. It is the oldest senior class landed society at Yale. That's why the owners named their restaurant using the same name.

The restaurant’s ambiance gives one a rather sleek and classic feel. It felt like visiting your college alma matter. The walls were adorned with mementos and memorabilia, framed graduation pictures in sepia may make you feel a bit nostalgic. I even saw a copy of my freshman Philippine history book, an Ateneo De Manila bluebook, university lockers, golf clubs and baseball bat and just practically anything and everything that will remind you of your college days. Except that at Skull and Bones, there’ll be no more professor to please nor report cards with grades to maintain. It’s all about having fun, catching up on each other’s stories and enjoying university comfort food. If you’re up for it, there are also signature booze to try like the PPD, Gummi Bears (with real drunken gummi bears), and these can also be ordered non-alcoholic + a wide range on interesting food choices. Surely, there will definitely be something you’ll fancy.

Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available such as Gummi Bear, Jungle Juice and PPD.

True to their promise, Skull and Bones serves ‘university comfort food’ as its finest. We’ve had some of their best sellers, we started off with Eggs Benny Burger—100% pure beef patty topped with caramelized bacon with eggs smothered with Bechamel sauce. It did not only looked good, it even tastes good. In fact, Eggs Benny Burger had received a lot of inquiries and comments on my Instagram account alone right after I’ve posted it.

Skull and Bones’ Pitbull dog tops my list among all the stuff that will keep me coming back for more. It may not be the perfect order on dates because it’s loaded with onions and mustard + jalapeño. But it’s served just the way you want it. Guaranteed hotdog bliss. Definitely a must try while in Skull and Bones. I’ve had to say that I really had a good American fast food experience here. The Pitbull sausage was to die-for! You can dab in some Tabasco sauce to add in some more kick. Price is great for it too. Portions are generous and good value for money. Service was delightful too.

Hey, it's a real diner and lives up to that billing. The wait staff is very friendly, casual, and do everything they can to make you feel at home. Great people, great food, and an interesting atmosphere. I would for sure recommend this place to others because of the food and service alone.

Skull and Bones is located at the second level of UP Town Center, Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City. Special thanks to Leo Kevin Mendiola and Dems Angeles.
